Quantum’s racing code zeros and some cruising code zeros are made with specially developed composites for higher load applications (bigger boats and more close-winded capable sails), while sails for smaller boats and broader angles can be made with heavy nylon. While the code zero for racing monohulls is often restricted by rule to a mid-girth of at least 75 percent of the foot length and a leech that is no more than 95 percent of luff length, code zeros for cruising boats and multihulls can be significantly larger and have a lot more variety in their design, from very deep to very flat. Quantum has even created a whole new line of reaching and running downwind sails geared towards cruisers to help make the decision clear and simple when considering adding a specialty sail to your inventory.Ī code zero is a code zero is a code zero, right? Not so. We find that once introduced to the code zero, cruisers will use this sail more than any other on the boat. A screecher is specifically a multihull term for a very large, very flat sail for going upwind or just cracked off. A screecher and a code zero are the same thing. Gennaker is just a general term for a potential downwind sail, a cross between a Genoa and an asymmetrical spinnaker. The term gennaker can cover a code zero, screecher, or reaching spinnaker. There are a lot of things we think we know about a code zero, many of which aren’t true, or, at least, not always true. These are the only Leviathans that don’t swim, relying instead on long insect-like legs to walk on the bottom of the ocean.Īside from Reefbacks, Sea Treaders are the only Leviathans that provide potentially useful raw materials. Most of Subnautica’s Leviathans resemble archetypical sea monsters with elongated bodies, but that’s not the case when it comes to Sea Treaders. ![]() Sea Treader (Subnautica) Image Credit: Unknown Worlds Entertainment Which is why they’re a bit higher up on our list. They’re also more likely to give you a good scare when you first encounter them. ![]() Reefbacks are some of the least threatening Leviathans in Subnautica but they are more dangerous than Glow Whales and Ventgardens because they can carry Tiger Plants. The spikes don’t do a ton of damage, but the plants have a high rate of fire and should be avoided whenever possible. In addition, the Reefbacks sometimes also carry Tiger Plants that shoot spikes at any nearby lifeforms, including the player. The creatures carry around various types of flora and corals along with barnacles that can be harvested for resources. One of the most distinguishing features of Reefback Leviathans is the mini-ecosystem living on their backs. That’s not to say that they can’t be dangerous, though. Luckily, you don’t have to worry about them attacking you because these gentle giants are entirely passive. Coming in at around 70 meters (230 feet) in length, the Reefback is by far the largest creature you’ll come across in the early game. The Reefback is the first Leviathan you’ll encounter while playing the base game and will likely leave a lasting impression on you due to its sheer size. Reefback (Subnautica) Image Credit: Unknown Worlds Entertainment That should give you an idea of just how big some of the following creatures are. Glow Whales are a tad bigger than typical Blue Whales, which are considered the largest animals on Earth, but they’re one of Subnautica’s smallest Leviathans. Similarly, Glow Whales occasionally jump out of the water for oxygen before diving back in. If only all of Subnautica’s Leviathans were so peaceful.Īlthough classified as herbivores, Glow Whales can be seen hunting shoals of fish and consuming them in one gulp, much like regular whales. The animals are so friendly that you can pet them or even ride them around if you want to. These peaceful Leviathans are typically found swimming in herds close to the ocean’s surface.Īlthough a bit intimidating due to their size, Glow Whales are passive creatures and won’t attack the player. Next up we have one of Subnautica’s friendliest creatures, the Glow Whale. Glow Whale (Below Zero) Image Credit: Unknown Worlds Entertainment But that’s pretty much the only thing you’ll have to worry about with this one. Worst case scenario, you might get lost while swimming inside it and possibly drown. Subnautica’s Leviathans, even the peaceful ones, typically have some sort of defense mechanism but that’s not the case here. While certainly impressive in size and appearance, Ventgardens are completely harmless to the player. If you get close enough to it, you’ll quickly notice that this is a living, breathing organism inspired by the Coelenterata phylum. ![]() You may mistake it for a giant underwater plant or mushroom upon first encountering it, but the Ventgarden is classified as Fauna. Ventgarden (Below Zero) Image Credit: Unknown Worlds Entertainment With that out of the way, let’s get to it. Finally, we’re not taking into account extinct Leviathans. So no Crabsnakes, Squidsharks or any other medium-sized creatures. Secondly, we’re only looking at Leviathan-class organisms as described in-game. First off, we’re looking at Leviathans from both the base game and the Below Zero standalone expansion. Very few games are capable of invoking pure terror with as much ease as Subnautica. ![]() ![]() Because of its tighter compression technique, a song encoded in the AAC format sounds better (to most ears, anyway) and takes up less space on the computer than if it were encoded with the same quality settings as an MP3 file. Downloading MP3s offered freely by bands and musicians just wanting to be heard is also legal.Ĭopying copyrighted music that you didn’t pay for is not legal, and that’s why you can be sure we haven’t heard the last from the RIAA. Ripping tracks from CDs that you’ve purchased over the years for playing on your iPod is legal. Mind you, MP3 files themselves are not illegal. RIAA has recently begun filing lawsuits against Internet service providers to find out the names of customers who use file-sharing services or host music-swapping sites and suing the individuals directly. In a further effort to ape Apple, Napster 2.0-as this Windows-only, pay-to-play service was dubbed-even began selling its own iPod clone.)Īlthough early attempts to squash other file-sharing services like Grokster and KaZaA in 2003 were first rebuffed by the courts, the RIAA succeeded in shutting down Grokster in 2005, and the group is looking into a new technology that can prevent CD tracks from being copied onto computers at all. But in October 2003, it returned in the form of an iTunes Music Store wannabe where music shoppers could legally download tracks for less than a buck apiece. (Napster, in its original form, died that day. RIAA eventually prevailed, and in 2002, Napster went to that great Web site in the sky. While Napster gave people a chance to sample a wide range of music for free, it also sent RIAA on a legal mission to shut down the file-sharing service. Napster traffic became so heavy that at some universities, it actually created a drag on their networks, and resulted in a Napster ban. ![]() The Napster software, authored by a teenager named Shawn Fanning, let music lovers search out and share MP3 files with anybody else on the Internet running the same program-which turned out to be millions of people. In 1999, a file-sharing service called Napster got a lot of attention from music fans and lawyers alike. ![]() They’re also taking a highly litigious interest in Internet services that make sharing MP3 files easy. With music being passed freely all over the world and CD sales dropping (maybe as a result of MP3 sharing, maybe because of unrelated factors), industry groups like RIAA have begun looking for new ways to block digital music copying. (After all, the exchange of the mix tape/CD has been an important part of the young American courting ritual for years.)īut the small size of MP3 files, mixed with the power of the Internet, ripped the lid off of a 55-gallon drum of worms. Before MP3, nobody thought much about copyright law when they dubbed a song mix to give to a friend or a romantic prospect. The arrival of the MP3 format changed the way people listened to-and shared-their music. Even though MP3 players didn’t exist yet, the court ruled in the Rio case that consumers have the right to move the music they own onto a playback device-as long as it’s for personal use. The Audio Home Recording Act of 1992 says that you can make copies of your own legally purchased music for your personal (noncommercial) use. The court found that the Rio itself violated no federal music-piracy laws, paving the way for dozens more MP3 players to hit the market. RIAA felt that the player-the soon-to-be-released Rio PMP300 from Diamond Multimedia-could serve as a tool for pirating copy-righted songs. Years before the iPod was even a twinkle in Steve Jobs’s eye, the Recording Industry Association of America sued the makers of the first portable MP3 player.
